Neurologic Physical Therapy in Acute Care: Clinical Decision Making from Admission to Discharge

Know when to proceed, modify, or hold. Read the chart like a clinician, not a checklist. Get your neurologic patients moving safely, from the emergency department through the ICU to discharge.

Why this course

Bed rest is not benign. Your clinical reasoning is the difference.

Acute care patients change hour to hour. Lines, pressors, sedation, and shifting lab values can make every session feel like a judgment call, and too often the default is to wait.

This course gives you a clear, repeatable way to decide who to see, when, and how much. You will learn to turn a chart review into a readiness decision, move patients safely across every hospital unit, and use objective measures to back up your discharge recommendations.

This course is for you if you are…

✓A physical therapist working in, or moving into, acute care
✓A neurologic PT resident or fellow building acute care competence
✓Preparing for the Neurologic Clinical Specialist (NCS) exam and want acute care depth
✓A clinician who wants to advocate confidently for early mobility with your team

What you'll learn

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

1Explain the role of neurologic physical therapy in acute care, and apply current evidence on early mobility, neuroplasticity, and bed rest prevention to decide the value, risk, and dose of an intervention.
2Interpret chart review data (neuroimaging, laboratory trends, medications, hemodynamics, and lines, leads, and tubes) to determine readiness and plan safe mobility.
3Differentiate common neurologic diagnoses, precautions, devices, and complications across the emergency department and the neuro, trauma, and cardiac intensive care units, and build mitigation strategies into mobility progression.
4Apply hold versus discuss-and-modify criteria, interprofessional communication, and structured session preparation to recognize and manage medical instability.
5Select and interpret objective outcome measures to support prognosis, goals-of-care discussions, team communication, and defensible discharge recommendations.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need acute care experience? No. The course is designed for clinicians working in or moving into acute care. It moves from foundations to advanced clinical decision making, so experienced acute care clinicians will also find new depth.
Is this an NCS exam prep course? It is a clinical course, not an exam review, but it covers acute care neurologic practice in depth. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by ABPTS.
How do I earn my certificate?Watch at least 90% of each video lesson and score 80% or higher on each module's knowledge check (retakes allowed) for 2.5 contact hours. Attend each mentoring session live (at least 80%) or watch at least 90% of its recording for 1.0 additional contact hour each, up to 4.5 total. Then complete the course evaluation.
What if I can't attend the live mentoring sessions? No problem. Both sessions (January 20 and February 9, 2027, 8:00 PM ET) are recorded and posted in the course. Watch at least 90% of a recording to earn its contact hour, just like the online lessons.
Can I learn at my own pace?Yes. All lessons are on demand, so you can start, pause, and return whenever it fits your schedule.
